Milford Sound
Full day from Queenstown
A full day given over to Piopiotahi, the most storied of the fiords, reached by a road that rewards every mile. We leave Queenstown in the morning for the Southern Alps and the deep quiet of Fiordland, stopping in Te Anau and at the viewpoints and short walks that make the Milford Road an experience in itself. At the water you board a nature cruise, close to two hours long, that carries you the length of the fiord beneath Mitre Peak and the falling water of Bowen and Stirling Falls, out to where the sea begins. Seals, dolphins, and the occasional Fiordland penguin appear along the shore. The drive is around five hours each way, so when the weather is kind you may choose to return by scenic flight instead, exchanging the road for a slow arc above the peaks, glaciers, and hidden lakes.

Glenorchy and Paradise
Half day from Queenstown
A half day, roughly four to five hours, is enough to reach some of the most affecting scenery in the country and still feel unhurried in it. The road traces the edge of Lake Wakatipu, counted among the finest drives in New Zealand, to the small township of Glenorchy and its quiet waterfront. Beyond lies Paradise and the threshold of Mount Aspiring National Park, a landscape of ancient beech forest, braided rivers, and valleys shaped by long vanished ice. Your guide carries the region's Māori history lightly, and points out the film locations many will know from the screen. Offered as either a morning or an afternoon journey, with a pause for tea where the view needs no introduction.

Aoraki Mount Cook
Full day from Queenstown
A full day in the company of Aoraki, the highest of New Zealand's mountains. The journey is its own reward, through the Kawarau Gorge and over the Lindis Pass into the wide light of the Mackenzie, until Lake Pukaki appears in its improbable blue with the mountain standing clear beyond. On arrival you have some hours in the national park to spend as you please: alpine paths to walk, the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre to wander, or simply the glaciers, lakes, and high summits to sit with a while. For those who wish to go further, an optional scenic flight lifts you over the ice, with the chance to land on the Tasman Glacier and stand where few ever will. Expect a full day of travel, around twelve hours in all, with the drive as memorable as the destination.
